Strépy-Thieu funicular lift

The process of networking Belgium’s waterways for vessels up to 1,350 tonnes demanded the construction of a new stretch for the Canal du Centre with the creation of a boat lift: the largest ever built anywhere in the world, covering a height of 73.15 metres! This exceptional construction is open to the public, and your experience will be packed full of amazing discoveries, including the impressive machine room and the panoramic view of the whole site and the delightful surrounding area, not to mention the exhibition of fossils discovered on the site during earth-moving work. Plus the educational aspect, with a film about the construction and operation of the lift, demonstrated by animated models and interactive games. Come and discover the new exhibition "Waterways from yesterday, today and tomorrow" dedicated to the inland navigation in Belgium.
